I just saw this today. I gave an interview a few years ago and someone asked me about my musical history (I have been a jazz & pop singer for the last 20+ years). I explained that while always a good singer, I was enormously stage shy. I remember freezing up in middle school at my first opportunity to sing in front of others. Later, some female friends of mine were doing the talent show and I wrote a song for them to sing (they didn't end up using it)...but I had zero interest in performing at the show myself. Then in 1988, I was a sophomore in high school and saw this performance. I was stunned. My first thoughts were, "Is he crazy? Isn't he worried about being laughed at? How did he get enough courage to do that?". It wasn't that the performance was so amazing (though it was great) that struck me, it was the audaciousness and confidence at that age to do it in front of a room full of high school peers (read: highly judgmental). It changed my life. A week later I answered an ad in the newspaper to sing for a band. Months later I lucked into an opportunity of a lifetime to sing backup for Sting for a summer. Throughout my career I have performed with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Tracy Chapman, Toni Braxton, Elton John, and many others. I have done thousands of shows all over the world, wrote many songs, and am looking forward to a new project I am about to launch this Fall. I am not exaggerating when I say this. None of that would have ever happened if not for seeing this performance and Joey's confidence. No chance at all. Joey and I were never friends, I don't even know if we ever spoke - but he changed my life. Thank you for your example, Joey.

Do you think there's room for another entertainer to do this? When I sing popular songs I impersonate the voices of the original singers. I was impressed by the Cher song. I think we should have a Dave Matthews sing off! That would be fun! 😀
